Classroom 1: Young Twos
(2 by Sept. 1)
Toute Petite Section
The most important work for our two-year-olds is the separation process and, of course, language development. Children form relationships with teachers while parents or caregivers stay close by until the separation occurs naturally. Soon, they are more independent, and become quite industrious in the classroom with paint, clay, sand, and blocks. Most often, they engage in parallel play, but they enjoy coming together as a whole group for snack, songs and stories, and slowly begin to see themselves as important members of the classroom community.
The Toute Petite classroom is the child’s first introduction to group life, as well as to an immersive French environment. Over the course of the year, the children become increasingly independent and engaged in the classroom materials and activities, all while absorbing the French language. While expressive language skills may vary, but by June, the children comprehend nearly 100% of the French instruction.
A typical day includes a 30-minute “accueil,” which is a time to transition from home to school and play with 4–5 activities set out by teachers. Accueil is followed by the “regroupement,” (morning meeting), where the children greet each other, sing songs, and learn about the day ahead. After morning meeting, the teacher presents 6–7 “ateliers autonomes” during workshop time, and the children circulate through different activities ranging from dramatic play to learning how to use scissors to early math or literacy projects. There is always time for art projects, le goûter, and beaucoup de musique!
