Smith Street Maternelle, is an independent French-American preschool in Brooklyn with campuses in Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, and Brooklyn Heights. Our bilingual curriculum emphasizes a Reggio-Emilia inspired, holistic approach to education with artistic expression as the foundation of a child’s social emotional development. After School Lead Teacher (part-time)

We are seeking a French Speaking Garderie Lead Teacher for our 2024–25 school year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan a variety of engaging academic and enrichment activities in French for preschoolers during the afterschool program in collaboration with Lead teachers in order to ensure the cohesion of the program.

  • Ensure a smooth transition between the extended day and the garderie classes. 

  • Prepare and gather materials and supplies required for the daily programs.

  • Differentiate lessons and activities as needed to ensure they are appropriate for students of various ages and abilities.

  • Supervise associate teacher(s) during the afterschool program to ensure smooth operation.

  • Assist and supervise children during all activities, ensuring their safety and engagement.

  • Assist children with meal/snack time and clean-up, promoting healthy eating habits.

  • Clean-up the site when children depart, inspecting and returning supplies to their appropriate places.

  • Communicating effectively with parents and responding to concerns in an appropriate and timely manner. 

  • Communicate effectively with lead and associate teachers to share feedback with families about the entire day.

Note: This position may require flexibility in schedule and additional responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School or designee.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, child development, educational psychology, or related field preferred.Strong knowledge of early childhood and general education theories.

  • Ability to establish meaningful relationships with all students in ways that foster the development of the whole child.

  • Ability to work with faculty in ways that nurture professional collaboration, exchange and growth.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with parents, colleagues, and supervisors.

  • Ability to design and implement innovative, engaging and age-appropriate curricula.

  • Ability to employ a broad range of instructional strategies to address the varying needs of students.

  • Ability to meet expectations of regular, predictable and reliable attendance.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Part Time Hours:
2:30–6:00pm, Mon–Fri

Employment End Date:
Yearly commitment

Salary Range:
$32–$34 per hour

 
 

Associate Teachers — Part & Full Time

We are seeking French Speaking part and full-time Associate Teachers for our 2024–25 school year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborating with Lead Teacher to implement developmentally appropriate curricula

  • Preparing Lessons and Activities in collaboration with Lead Teacher

  • Assisting in all other areas of classroom life

  • Maintaining appropriate ratio in class at all times

  • Keeping a safe, clean and sanitary work environment

  • Maintaining daily contact with parents and updates on children’s development and daily happenings

  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to speak French fluently; native fluency preferred.

  • Valid work permit and/or visa

  • Bachelor’s degree (foreign degrees accepted)

  • Willingness to obtain CPR training

  • State Mandated Reporter Certification

  • Willingness to obtain Infectious Disease Training

  • Willingness to submit to Background Check by the Department of Investigation and State Clearance Registry

SALARY & BENEFITS

Full Time Hours:
8:00am–4:00pm, Mon – Fri

Part Time Hours Vary

Employment Start Date:
August 21, 2024

Employment End Date:
Yearly commitment

Salary Range:
$41,500 – $45,500 (full-time)
Commensurate with years of experience and educational degrees

Matching 401K plan with Fidelity Investments

Vacation:
Up to 15 weeks paid vacation (as per the 2024–25 school calendar)
