Classroom 2: Threes
(3 by Dec 31)

Petite Section

As the children move towards three, they become more interested in the social world of school. Their work with art projects or block-building grows more collaborative. During choice time, the 3s will stay longer at any given activity and begin to plan their block buildings or have an idea about what they would like to paint. They think not only about process but also about an end design. In the doll corner, they begin to take on more specific roles and play out a collaborative scene, recreating the world around them.

In Petite Section, children have moved out of the toddler stage and are transitioning into true preschoolers. They come to school excited to see friends, to play pretend games together, and to collaborate on art projects and block-building. Their attention spans grow, and non-native French speakers begin to produce complex phrases and respond to their teachers exclusively in French. They begin to focus more on the end result of an art project in addition to the process, and take their time with the materials, showing more intention in their work.

A typical day is quite similar in structure to Toute Petite Section, with accueil, regroupement, and ateliers autonomes. The time spent engaged in the activities is extended as a result of their increased attention spans. Children who stay for full day enjoy lunch in the classroom, a rest time, and a trip to the park. In January, the children begin learning to play chess in French through a program called “Chess at Three.” It’s an extraordinary program that teaches chess through fairy tales, which is both compelling and effective for this age group.
