Classroom 3: Threes/Fours
(4 by Dec 31)
Moyenne Section
At the age of four, students make the amazing transformation between preschoolers and kindergarteners. Four-year-olds feel a strong sense of ownership of their classroom and thrive on structure and predictability. Morning meeting takes on a new importance as they use the schedule to think about the activities of the day. Classroom jobs are equally important, and students feel a sense of autonomy and independence as they navigate the classroom and make deliberate choices about their work. They may even arrive to school with a plan in mind for a block building and work on it throughout the week. Mastery of the materials and the French language gives the 4s a sense of accomplishment and confidence that they carry with them to Kindergarten and beyond.
Moyenne Section is such a wonderful year—it’s when we see near fluency across the board in the French language, and the children feel a true sense of ownership of the school environment and the choices they make for their day. Their projects become more meaningful, and they are deeply engaged in the community of friends, and they recognize their special place in it.
The structure of the day is similar to Petite Section, with an even longer morning meeting and workshop time. The children continue with Chess at Three, and also add “la Sophrologie,” or mindfulness and meditation, as they learn to recognize, label, and manage the strong emotions that come with being a four-year-old. The teachers also integrate more early math & literacy instruction into the workshops, class meetings, and even art projects.
